Latest Update: Main Street of Chatham reopens!
July 14, 2008
July 14th! This is a date that we will all remember as the day the Main Street of Chatham reopened. Yes, you can now drive up and down the street without barricades to stop you in your tracks. It didn’t take long for cars and delivery vehicles to discover the open roadway. Yesterday all was silent on the street except for the sounds of kids on scooters and quiet conversations. Today the sounds are of vehicles - and of course the ever present trains.
Come to the village and celebrate the grand reopening of the street. The official celebration takes place on Friday, July 18th, 5-9 pm. A community-wide pot luck dinner will lead of the event. The Chatham Business Alliance is providing hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks. Everyone coming to celebrate is asked to bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share. King of the Forest will provide dancing music (thanks to a generous grant from the Bank of Greene County), so don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Walking is becoming easier every day on Main Street. The sidewalks on both sides of the street should be done by the end of today. Please continue to watch your step, because there are openings and protruding hardware where streetlights and trees will be installed. The streetlights are due in from California in early July; they should be installed by… READ MORE

Sidewalks! Today sidewalks on the east side of the street are going in. They’re being done in sections, so that there is still access to each building. People are already walking on the sections done earliest this morning. Since Main Street was paved with asphalt earlier this week, pedestrians can stroll along the traffic-less street until all the sidewalks are… READ MORE

Whew! It’s hot out there! The temperature is in the 90’s and the intrepid Colarusso construction crew is out on Main Street laying down the first of four layers of asphalt. The steaming and crackling make you think you’re at an active volcano instead of beautiful downtown Chatham! But for those of us just walking by to do our shopping… READ MORE
May 17 Update
May 17, 2008
Work is proceeding nicely on our roads, sidewalks, and infrastructure. All the sidewalks are gone on Main Street, and have been temporarily replaced by tamped-down earth and gravel. Though everything is accessible to pedestrians, we recommend that you leave your 3 inch heels at home. On rainy days the road can be a bit muddy. Keep your eyes on where… READ MORE

It’s another beautiful spring day, and the sidewalks on Main Street are being eaten up! The street was dispatched in one day, and the rest of the sidewalks on the west side of Main Street should be history by day’s end. Tomorrow, if the weather holds, the sidewalks on the east side of the street will meet their fate.

Main Street is closed to vehicles! The weather is perfect and Colarusso Construction is making amazing progress. Most of the west side of Main Street is already gone, thanks to a humungous excavator which is eating up the pavement at an astonishing rate.
There is still convenient parking (see earlier blog) and access to every store and restaurant on… READ MORE

Paving is almost complete on Kinderhook Street and Park Row, so work can begin on Main Street soon. Expect Main Street to be closed on Monday, May 5 (perhaps not at the crack of dawn, but sometime during the day, so don’t park on Main Street!).
Once Main Street is closed, Park Row and Kinderhook Street will be the… READ MORE

Work on Main Street will begin soon! If you’ve visited Chatham recently, you’ve seen the excavation being done on Park Row and near the circle (between Our Daily Bread and The Blue Plate). Weather permitting, those areas will be paved on Monday and Tuesday, April 28-29. Once that paving is done, Park Row and Kinderhook Street will be the Main… READ MORE

Temporary Shutdown
January 06, 2008
2008! Brrr… a cold beginning. The Department of Transportation reconstruction project is experiencing a temporary shutdown due to the weather.
As early in the spring as possible, Colarusso Construction will begin the work on Main Street. Since the water lines need to be replaced, workers have to wait for the permafrost to be out of the ground before beginning… READ MORE
