River Views of the Hudson River School

Sat. May 2, 2009 at 10:00am - Sun. Oct 11, 2009 at 4:00pm

River Views of the Hudson River School opens on May 2 at the Thomas Cole House and remains on view, loaned from private collectors, through October 11, 2009. This exhibition of approximately 15 landscape paintings by major figures in the Hudson River School, including Thomas Cole, Sanford Gifford and Jasper Cropsey, explores the artists’ choices regarding depictions of the river, which held deep symbolism as America’s first river, especially in the region of Catskill where Cole made his home. The exhibition presents a unique opportunity to examine the works of major 19th-century landscape artists in the midst of the sites that inspired them. To enhance the connection between the paintings and the surrounding landscapes, a series of guided hikes also will be offered to the places where the paintings are set.
