A contemplative practice to deepen seeing
Students are invited to deepen their seeing, learning how to continually draw more out of that which seems familiar, experiencing the richness of the world observed closely and felt intimately. The excitement in the process lies not only in discovering what lies before our eyes and revealing and expressing this through paintings, but also recognizing the relevance of the process to all forms of study and exploration, and its potential for shedding light on life, humanity, nature.
for adults and teens (ages 16& up)
This workshop for adults & teens explores the landscape, and the color, pattern, form, and shape that lie within; as well as surface preparation, composition, space, and the technical considerations of the media used. Questions to be explored include: What is in a landscape that is too inside ourselves? How does the landscape relate to other subject matter? With what sensitivity can we see and recognize what is in our immediate environment? Artists’ work throughout history is studied to understand the relationships between these and the study process and the work made in class. The intent is to develop and nurture each student’s unique potential. Students of all levels are welcome. Study is progressive, building on previous work in the studio.
instructor
Wendy Shuster is an exhibiting painter with 17 years teaching experience. Her work can be found in collections in the US , Mexico and Europe . She founded and then has directed a teaching studio in the Hudson Valley for over 14 years, and recently expanded its reach to NYC. While she earned a degree from Bucknell University , the most compelling and inspirational study she experienced was during four years of private advanced work with Nicholas Buhalis in his Woodstock and NYC studio schools and galleries. She continues to harvest rich material from a year’s sabbatical painting in Paris followed by travel, including a return visit to Mexico and a recent journey to Argentina . She is deeply immersed in and excited about recent art work with and from the movement explorations of modern dancer/choreographers, and learning the ways of organic farming.
